- What is Submatriculation?
- A program that allows undergraduate seniors to take graduate
courses in order to obtain both undergraduate and graduate (MA
or MS) degrees simultaneously.
|
|
- Who may apply?
- The best qualified junior undergraduates. The applications of
students who wish to submatriculate will be judged on the same
criteria used for outside applications to the Graduate Program.
Selection is based on a personal statement, letters of recommendation,
GPA, and GRE scores.
|
|
- When to apply
- By January 1 of the student's junior year, but late applications
may be considered. (Late applicants may have trouble completing
requirements in time.)
|
|
- Approval process
- Before initiating the procedure for submatriculation, potential
applicants should consult with both the Undergraduate and Graduate
Chairs. They should then obtain a Submatriculation form from the
Anthro Graduate Assistant. The form must be signed by the following
people: 1) Undergrad Chair of student's major department, 2) Grad
Chair of department to which student is applying, 3) Assistant
Dean of student's school, and 4) Associate Dean for Graduate Studies.
|
|
- How to apply
- Once the Submatriculation form has been signed by the appropriate
people, a graduate application form should be obtained from, and
submitted to the Office
of the Graduate Division. Three letters of recommendation,
college transcipt, statement of purpose, and GRE scores are required
and should also be submitted to the Graduate Office. Arrangements
to take the GRE should be made before the application deadline.
(GRE application information is posted on the Undergraduate Program
bulletin board in the Department.)
|
|
- Timeframe
- Decisions on admission as a submatriculant will be made by April
1, unless application is made later in the term.
|
|
- Registration
- A submatriculant will continue to register through the College
of Arts and Sciences until he or she receives the BA degree.
|
|
- Credit
- Note: Only graduate credits earned after submatriculation
status has been established may be counted toward the MA or MS
degree. Ten graduate courses are required for the MA or MS degree.
A maximum of four graduate courses may be "double-counted" to
fulfill the BA and MA/MS requirements (with permission of the
Deans of the Graduate School and the College of Arts and Sciences).
Any rules of the graduate school regarding acceptability of grades
also apply to submatriculants. All requirements of the College
of Arts and Sciences for the BA degree must be met.
|
|
- Graduate status and requirements
- Submatriculants may seek either the MA or MSc degree. Those
planning to proceed with a PhD should enter the MA track.
Application for admission to the PhD program may be made only
after completing requirements for the MA degree. (Submatriculants
are usually advised to continue at another university for the
PhD). The MSc track is not compatible with the requirements
for the PhD. Rather it is intended for students who do not plan
to continue to the PhD but who wish to go intensively into some
aspect of anthropology without being held responsible for the
basics in all of its aspects. In all cases, submatriculants are
expected to satisfy the requirements for their particular graduate
track. Note: to avoid any ambiguity, programs should be
discussed with the Graduate Group Chair before applying for admission.
